Loose shoes, tight holster and a warm place*

To borrow a phrase, today’s First World Problem is that my new Tagua leather holster for the G 21 is very tight. And the thumb break won’t snap on.

First, the old standby – put the (unloaded) gun into a plastic baggie and jam as hard as possible into the holster. Make sure to push on the back of the slide; otherwise, you’ll just be pushing the frame in. (And, if loaded, you could end up chambering a round.)

After sitting a couple of days, it was better, but the thump break still was not close enough to snap. Solution – per good interwebs feedback, apply 90% rubbing alcohol to inside surface and then try again. Caution: the alcohol will loosen up the black leather dye.

After two applications, some direct attention to the break strap, and some pulling, the leather stretched enough to snap.

I’m going to let it set for a day. Then break out some LPC black shoe polish.

*Anyone remember the butt of that joke?

Having fun with my G21

Putting new sights on DILIT’s G44 got me focused on Glocks for a bit. There just may be a little order coming in from Midway. In the meantime, I thought I’d strip the 21 down and do a little cleaning and trigger work. So pop out the three pins and here is what you get:

These are the parts we will be polishing to remove friction in the trigger assembly.

Post-polishing:

Reassembly:

Where metal meets metal.

Reassembly into frame:

And, finally, testing trigger pull weight:

4 to 4.25 pounds. If it was just for targets, I’d put a 3.5 pound trigger bar in. Having it go into the carry rotation, I’ll keep it firm.
Yup, winter is for projects. I’ll be looking for that Midway package.

Day before Christmas

What to do, what to do?

Why, go to the Range, of course! (Word of explanation – due to family schedules, we celebrated Christmas a week ago. We are all done, even the wrapping paper clean-up.) And Santa did bring that new guide rod and spring. So:

Fresh powder! 25 degrees! Looming gray skies!

Good day for UpLula loading!

Yup, she works. 80 rounds of LRN and FMJ with nary a failure. Firmly into battery each time and no schmutz in the striker pin channel.

Life is good. And Merry Christmas to all!

Oh, Frabjabulous Day!

Range day, of course. Yes, it was 27 degrees, an inch of snow and gusting from the northwest.

But, “When the going gets tough,

”The tough go shopping!”

So, I went to the range.

230 g. ball and 200 g. lead semi wadcutters. They rang steel.

However, the ball ammo I had reloaded in 2016 and I noticed some dimpled primers. Light strikes that I had put back.

Not to worry. The 1911 chewed up whatever the G21 choked on.
Got some cold soaked brass to clean now.

But hot .45 ACP brass is pretty easy to retrieve from the melted snow around it.
